Epson Printer & Scanner Checklist: FastFoto FF-680W, Blank Pages, Carriage Issues, DTF, and Inkjet vs Laser

This checklist is for when you need an Epson working today

I’ve spent the last few years coordinating production for a small shop that handles a lot of rush work. In my role, I’ve triaged more than 200 deadline-driven jobs, including same-day turnarounds for event clients. Everything in this article comes from actual troubleshooting, not a spec sheet.

Seven steps are below. You don’t need all of them. Jump to the one that matches your emergency.

Step 1: Define the job before you touch the machine

When something doesn’t print, the natural instinct is to start pressing buttons. Stop. The most useful question I ask myself is: is this a printer problem, a file problem, a driver problem, or a paper path problem? The same goes for scanning: what are we scanning, and how fast does it need to happen?

The trigger event that changed how I approach this was March 2024. A customer needed 400 historical photos digitized before an event. The previous vendor had quoted them a flatbed scanner and a 12-page manual. We brought an Epson FastFoto FF-680W, connected it with USB, and got through the pile in one evening. The difference was not the hardware. It was knowing the job first: photos, batch mode, searchable output.

If you skip this step, every other step is a guess.

Step 2: Set up the FastFoto FF-680W the right way

The Epson FastFoto FF-680W Wireless High-Speed Photo and Document Scanning System is a batch scanner. It is not a photo editing machine. It’s made to move real piles of old prints and loose paperwork into digital files with a minimum of fuss.

Here’s the checklist I use for a fast scanning session:

  • Set the output format before you scan. JPEG is fine for photos. Use searchable PDF for documents if you’ll need to find text later.
  • Use the photo feeder for photo stacks and the document feeder for paper stacks. Mixing them slows everything down.
  • Use a USB cable for long runs. Wi-Fi is fine for a few pages; for a ton of pages, wired is more reliable.
  • Take out staples and paper clips. A scrap of paper in the feeder will stop the whole session.
  • Use the color restoration option carefully on faded photos. It helps, but it’s not a substitute for professional restoration.

I don’t have hard data on how many slow scanning sessions are caused by the wrong resolution, but based on our own first run, my sense is that most are. Use 300 dpi for normal documents, 600 dpi for archive prints. More than that just creates huge files and slower sessions.

Step 3: Fix an Epson printer printing blank pages

Searching for “Epson printer printing blank pages”? I’ve been there. The most frustrating part is that the printer gives you no error. No beep, no jam, just white paper sliding through. You’d think full ink is enough. It isn’t.

Work backwards through this list:

Everything I’d read about high-capacity ink systems said a full tank means no blank pages. My experience suggests otherwise: a full tank does not help if the ink can’t reach the printhead. Run the nozzle check before you assume the whole printer is dead.

Step 4: Deal with the inkjet printer carriage

The inkjet printer carriage is the assembly that holds the printhead and moves across the page. When it jams, you usually get an error message. But sometimes a stuck carriage causes blank pages, because the printhead never reaches the paper.

Treat a carriage jam like a crime scene:

  1. Power the printer off and unplug it. Do not yank the carriage.
  2. Open the scanner or top cover and look for paper scraps, sticky labels, or a torn piece of label backing. These are the usual suspects.
  3. Clean the encoder strip. That clear, plastic strip on the carriage rail tells the printhead where it is. If it has ink or dust on it, the carriage gets confused. Use a lint-free cloth with distilled water. Don’t use alcohol or glass cleaner. I learned that one the hard way.
  4. If the carriage still won’t move, stop. Forcing it can break the printhead, timing belt, or carriage rail. Call Epson support or a qualified technician.

Not ideal, but workable. The machine that gets dirty is the machine that gets used. A clean carriage path prevents a lot of “printer printing blank pages” calls.

Step 5: Direct-to-film (DTF) printer: buy the system, not just the printer

If you’re thinking about a direct-to-film (DTF) printer, the printer itself is only part of the set-up. DTF also uses transfer film, white ink, adhesive powder, and a heat cure step. A low base price means nothing if the system is down when you need it.

Real talk: I’ve watched small shops get burned by buying a converted inkjet from a vendor that never asked about their actual workflow. The base price saved them maybe $1,500. The downtime cost them way more after the white ink clogged and the film would not peel correctly.

Ask these questions before buying:

  • What printhead does it use, and how much does a replacement cost?
  • How does the white ink recirculate? White ink settles quickly. If the system doesn’t handle that, you’ll get clogs.
  • Can the vendor run a sample with your image and your substrate? If they won’t even take a paid sample order, that’s a red flag.
  • Do they treat small orders like normal orders? The first $200 test order says a lot. The vendor who takes that seriously is the vendor who will pick up the phone when your $20,000 order is stuck.

Small doesn’t mean unimportant. It means potential.

Step 6: An inkjet or laser printer? The answer starts with your output

So, an inkjet or laser printer? For photos, large format, labels, and direct-to-film, inkjet wins. Laser toner is not built for those jobs. For high-volume black text, laser can be cheaper and more predictable. But the question isn’t as simple as “laser is better for business.”

In my shop, the math changed when we moved to an Epson EcoTank inkjet. The running cost is way closer to a laser than the old cartridge days. Color pages no longer hurt. That doesn’t mean laser is wrong. It means you can’t answer until you compare total cost, not just the price of the machine.

Here’s the thing: the lowest quoted price often isn’t the lowest total cost. Include ink or toner, maintenance, paper waste, and reprints. A printer that prints blank pages because you skipped a nozzle check is not cheap to run.

I can only speak to my own shop’s context. If you’re a 100-person office with centralized IT, your maintenance workflow is different. For a small or mid-size shop, a high-capacity inkjet or a color laser both work. Just do the math on the consumables.

Step 7: Back up your backup

Our company policy now requires a 48-hour buffer because of what happened in 2023. We lost a $12,000 contract when a vendor’s “fast” printing process came back with a critical error. The lesson: the printer that fails during the first test is the printer that fails during the last run.

For Epson printers, “backup” means spare ink, clean rollers, and a saved copy of the driver. For the FastFoto FF-680W, it means a clean feeder path and a test scan before the pile is on the table. For DTF, it means extra film and powder, and a second way to print if the first machine goes down.

Not every job needs a backup unit. But every deadline needs a plan for the first mistake.

Common mistakes that make everything worse

  • Running head cleaning ten times. You’ll use ink and contaminate the waste ink pad before you fix a clog.
  • Cleaning the encoder strip with alcohol or paper towels. Distilled water and a lint-free cloth are enough.
  • Scanning 100 pages without testing the feeder. One staple can ruin a whole batch.
  • Buying a DTF system based on the base price alone. Ask about support, lead times, and consumables.
  • Assuming laser always costs less. For color-heavy small-batch work, a high-capacity inkjet can be the better total cost.

Bottom line

Start with the job, then choose the machine, then protect it with basic maintenance. Whether you’re setting up an Epson FastFoto FF-680W, hunting down blank pages, clearing a carriage jam, picking a direct-to-film (DTF) printer, or deciding between an inkjet or laser printer, the same order works: diagnose, test, then buy.

And don’t let anyone make you feel small because you’re a small customer. Today’s small order is tomorrow’s regular account. Treat it that way, and you’ll never be the person standing next to a printer spitting out blank pages twenty minutes before a deadline.
